Students

Student eligibility

Eligible Students

  • Students (6th - 12th grade) attending area District 196 High Schools or Middle Schools.
  • Home-schooled students living within District 196 boundaries. Contact the coaches at 196mtbteam@gmail.com for more information.

Not Eligible

  • Students living outside the District 196 school district boundaries.

Students that are not eligible to join the 196 MTB may have the option to register and race with MCA as an “Independent Rider” in MCA races >>. Contact the coaches or MCA >> for more on the Independent Rider option.

To be considered registered with 196 MTB, both steps must be competed.

Ride leaders​

Skilled and dedicated volunteer coaches are the most important aspect of the Minnesota Cycling Association. A coach puts the safety and overall wellbeing of their student-athletes as the first priority. MCA coaches and Ride Leaders are role models and teachers who are open to learning the best practices of youth mountain bike coaching and actively work to hone their leadership skills.

We need Ride Leaders at ALL levels of skills and abilities. The path to becoming an MCA coach or Ride Leader generally begins with volunteering for your local team or attending a Spring Summit and Mountain Bike Skills. A 196 MTB Ride Leader Pre-Season Summit is coming soon with training for Ride Leaders!

​All coaches are required to obtain a coach license at one of three levels:​

  • Level 1 Certification: Assists all coaches as directed by the head coach (56%)​
  • Level 2 Certification: Assists level 3 coaches with advanced tasks such as leading rides (24%)​
  • Level 3 Certification: Takes a leadership role within the team. Equivalent competencies as head coach (20%)

All Ride Leaders are required to obtain a coach license “Level 1 Certification”, whichrequires approximately 2 to 3 hours to complete.

Note that student registration numbers are dependent on the number of Ride Leaders & Parent Volunteers.​
