Bike Repair Kits

Because the trail doesn’t care how far you are from the parking lot. Mechanical issues happen—and never at a convenient time. A repair kit lets you fix problems on the spot instead of walking your bike back.

It’s about safety, responsibility, and keeping the ride rolling. Plus, helping a teammate fix their bike? Trail hero status unlocked.

196MTB Coaches recommend the Riders and Ride Leaders carry the following whenever riding.

Examples and recommendations are provided with links, but shop around online. Even better, shop at your local bike shop!

Tire tube

Your ride’s backup plan. When your tire goes pssshhhht, a spare tube gets you back rolling faster than you can say “mechanical!”

To purchase the right tire, you need to know the following:

  • Tire size, like 27.5 or 29
  • Tire width, ...
  • Valve, like Presta or Schrader
  • If your tire is tubeless

Tire pump

The secret weapon against stubborn tires. These little tools help you pop the tire off the rim without turning your thumbs into mashed potatoes.

A floor pump with an air pressure gauge (PSI) is the most effective method to inflate your tires ahead of a ride, but you can't take it on the trail.

A pocket pump is best for trail riding.

Tire lever

Because flat tires don’t fix themselves. A pump brings your tire back to life so you can get back to the fun part—riding!

Tubeless tire plugs

ONLY FOR TUBELESS TIRES, friends!

When your tire gets a puncture too big for sealant to fix, these sticky little strips jump in and plug the leak—literally. Pop one in, add air, and you’re back riding like nothing happened.

Think of them like a trail-side bandage for your tire.

Multi-tool

Also known as the Swiss Army knife of biking, this all-in-one lifesaver has the tools you need for quick trail fixes—tightening loose bolts, adjusting your seat, or fixing small issues before they become big problems. Small enough to fit in your pocket, powerful enough to save your ride.

Chain lube

The smoothie for your drivetrain. Keeps your chain running quiet, smooth, and fast (and way less squeaky on the trail)... And it makes your drivetrain last longer!

Skip the the WD-40, friends!

Master link

The chain’s quick-fix superhero. If your chain breaks, this tiny piece can save your ride and earn you instant trail hero status.

Just make sure you have the right one—chains vary by brand and speed (often SRAM or Shimano). Not sure? Swing by your local bike shop and they’ll help you match it up perfectly.

Bar ends

Your handlebars’ bodyguards. They protect your grips (and you!) when the bike takes a tumble—because crashes happen, even to the pros.

And bar ends do NOT have to be expensive.

Human repair

Don't forget about the human riding the bike! Consider packing some basic first-aid items, like bandages and wipes.
